Cuéntanos de ti. ¿Qué te gustaría que los demás conocieran de José Miguel?
No se si de mí, pero si me gustaría que conocieran más sobre el arte de trabajar en madera. Soy padre, diseñador gráfico, trabajo en mercadeo, size medium de camis. Ajajaja, no me gusta el spot light.
¿Cuándo y cómo nace Questilla?
Questilla nace cuando estaba comprando plantas para mi casa. Mi hijo tiene asthma y lei que algunas plantas podían ayudarme a mantener un ambiente mejor dentro de la casa. Empecé a comprar plantas hasta que me quedé sin espacio en los muebles que tengo. Ahí empecé a buscar inspiración y nació el primer columpio sencillo con soga. Subí varias fotos a mi instagram y una amiga me dijo que le encantaba y que los podía vender. Ahí empecé a ver qué otras cosas podía crear y sin darme cuenta me enamoré del proceso de trabajar con madera.
¿Desde hace cuanto trabajas con los materiales que más predominan en las piezas Questilla?
Honestamente la madera es algo que siempre ha estado en mi vida. Cuando era un chamaco solíamos crear rampas para las patinetas y las bicicletas. Siempre ha habido algo que me hace usar la madera para un proyecto, pero nunca había aprendido a trabajarla correctamente. La madera es más que un material. La madera nace de una semilla, crece, se fortalece y luego pasa a mis manos. Yo siento que es como un ciclo. No se, es algo atractivo para mí.
¿Qué tipos de piezas o servicios Questilla ofrece?
Pues lo más que hacemos son columpios en madera para plantas y accesorios. Estos columpios se pueden guindar utilizando ganchos ó también se pueden poner a la pared directamente y funciona cómo tablillas. Yo prefiero la manera de tablilla para adentro de la casa y cómo columpio para afuera, pero de las dos manera se ven bien. También hacemos “duhos” que son como banquitos para tiestos grandes, escritorios, en fin cualquier cosa que sea en madera. Cada día aprendo cosas nuevas y se agrandan las posibilidades.
¿Qué proceso conlleva la creación de cada pieza y cuánto tiempo toma producirlas?
Uffff. Son varios pasos. Primero escojo la madera que quiero usar. La madera viene de diferentes partes del mundo y tengo que estar pendiente porque dependiendo de donde venga se va a comportar ó va a coger el color que quiero. Luego pasa al taller para cortar cada pedazo a la medida. Una vez tengo todos los pedazos cortados procedo a lijar con una lija gruesa para quitar los químicos, golpes, imperfecciones y la dejo en la capa perfecta. Luego la lijo con una lija suave para que quede lo más suavecita posible. Dependiendo el inventario, le aplico un tinte ó una cera a base de aceite. Me gusta el color natural, pero a veces con un tinte la madera se puede ver brutal. Una vez se seca, paso a cortar la soga ó el cordón que voy a utilizar y con una fórmula secreta procedo a crear los niveles e incorporar el aro donde se cuelga. Cada pieza viene con un reto diferente. Puede ser la madera, la soga ó hasta que los hoyos estén alineados perfectamente. Un amigo un día me dijo que yo paso mucho trabajo, pero para mi es más que trabajo, es algo que me disfruto mucho así que no es en vano.
¿Qué planes tiene Questilla para el 2019?
Questilla para el 2019 tiene planeado seguir creciendo, solicitar la licencia de artesano, quiero tomar algunos cursos de madera para seguir aprendiendo y poder expandir la cantidad de productos. Honestamente voy un día a la vez. Todavía no puedo creer que esto es un proyecto y que va a la velocidad que va. Para mi ha sido una bendición por que me apasiona y también mi hijo disfruta ayudarme (dentro de lo que puede hacer). El PLAN es poder trabajar más duro y más eficiente.
Me gustaría agradecer a las personas que han estado en el camino conmigo en este invento / proyecto. Originalmente el nombre era La Estillita y había otro nombre que estaba como opción y un amigo me escribió por Instagram: #questilla. Instantáneamente la mente me explotó y le dije que ese era el nombre y que cuando lo viera le iba a invitar un palo. Ese amigo va a tener productos #questilla for ever jajaja. Otra cosa, en mi primer pop up vendí $0, osea me fuí en perdida por que pagué el espacio. Con esto dicho me gustaría decirle a cualquier persona que quiera empezar un proyecto ó negocio... #notequites. Después de esa experiencia trabajé doblemente duro y poco a poco estoy viendo el fruto. Tell us about you. What would you like for others to know about José Miguel?
Don’t know about myself, but I do would like for others to know more about the art of working with wood. I’m a father, graphic designer, I work in marketing, medium size shirt… Hahaha, I don’t like the spotlight.
When and how is Questilla born?
Questilla was born when I was buying plants for my house. My son has asthma and I read that some plants could help maintain a healthier environment inside the house. So I started to buy plants until I ran out of spaces in the furnitures I had. So I started to look for inspiration and the first single swing with rope, was born. I uploaded a couple of pictures to instagram and a friend told me that she loved it, and that I could sell them. That’s when I started to see what other things I could create and without realizing it, I had fell in love with the process of working with wood.
For how long have you worked with the most predominant materials in Questilla pieces?
Honestly, wood is something that has always been in my life. When I was a young kid, we used to create ramps for skates and bikes. There has always been something that makes me use wood for a project, but I had never learned how to use it correctly before. Wood is more than a material. Is born from a seed, grows, strengthens, and then it goes through my hands. I feel is like a cycle. I don’t know is something attractive to me.
What types of pieces or services Questilla offers?
What we do most are the wooden swings for plants and accessories. These swings can be hung using hooks or can be directly fixed to the walls too, and function as shelves. I prefer them as shelves for interiors and as swings for outdoors, but they look good either way. We also make “duhos” that are a type of small stool for big flower pots, desks, in short everything that’s wood. Everyday I learn new things and the possibilities grow.
What kind of process it takes to create each piece and how long it takes to produce them?
Ufff. There are several steps. I first choose the wood I want to use. The wood comes from different parts of the world and it requires a keen eye, since the wood will behave and absorb the color, depending from where it comes. It then passes to the workshop so that each piece can be cut to the right size. Once I have all the pieces chopped, I proceed to sand it with a coarse sandpaper to remove all chemicals, bruises, imperfections, and leave it with a perfect surface. I then sand it with a softer sandpaper to polish it, and leave it as smooth as possible. Depending on the inventory, I apply to it a tint or an oil based wax. I like the natural color, but with a tint the wood can also look amazing. Once it dries, I proceed to cut the ropes and incorporate the ring from where it’ll be hanged. Each piece comes with a different challenge. It can be the wood, the rope, or even that the holes end up perfectly aligned. A friend of mine once told me that I work extra hard at them, but for me is more than a job, is something I truly enjoy so is not in vain.
What are Questilla plans for 2019?
Questilla 2019 plans are to continue growing, apply for the artisan license, I want to take a couple of wood courses to continue learning and diversifying the product offer. Honestly I’m taking one day at a time. I can’t still believe that this is a project that is moving at the speed is doing. For me it has been a great blessing because I’m passionate about it, and my son enjoys helping me, within what he’s capable of doing. The PLAN, is to be able to work harder and more efficiently.
I would like to thank the people that has been all the way with me in this project. Originally the name was going to be La Estillita, and there was another name as an option too, until a friend wrote at my Instragram: #questilla. Immediately my mind was blown and I told him that would be the name, and that when I saw him I’d invite him a drink. That friend is going to have #questilla products for life hahaha. Another thing I’d like to add, is that the first pop up we had, we went out with $0 in sales, so I left at a loss because I paid for the space, and with this I just want to say to anyone out there starting a project or business #dontquit. After that experience I worked harder and I’m starting to see the fruits of this labor.
