Un buen diseño es mucho más que una estética atractiva y su propia función. Un buen diseño es aquel que atiende cuidadosamente todos sus componentes, incluyendo la materialidad, el proceso de producción, incluso la responsabilidad y sensibilidad ambiental. Tal es el caso de las piezas de la diseñadora de moda puertorriqueña Sally Torres Vega. Sus creaciones son estéticamente minimalistas e innovadoras; funcionalmente son cómodas y prácticas; y en cuanto a su materialidad son ecológicamente sostenibles, pues la artista crea sus propias tintas y telas con material orgánico. En fin, la diseñadora es cómplice del minimalismo, la elegancia y la innovación.
Como todo artista y/o diseñador, Sally Torres Vega se distingue por su estilo propio. Este es “uno relajado, atemporal y limpio, donde cada pieza funciona individualmente, lo que quiere decir que cada cliente lo puede individualizar a su estilo personal (algo que me encanta ver, cómo cada persona lo usa de distintas maneras)”. Para la artista, cada cliente crea su obra de arte, su composición artística. Las piezas de STV “van dirigidas a cualquier mujer que disfrute vestirse para sí misma y no para agradar a otros”. Su clientela femenina suele ser creativa, divertida y estar en búsqueda de algún “wow factor” con entidad minimalista.
La inspiración para los diseños surge de distintas fuentes: de “los materiales que consiga, un artefacto, siluetas que encuentre y la mayoría, de necesidades con las cuales me topo, la necesidad de algo más ancho o más largo, o más corto. Y así…” Por tanto, su fuente de inspiración es un juego entre la disponibilidad del material/objeto inspirador y la creatividad en acción. En sus obras, la sostenibilidad juega un rol primordial y distintivo, y más ahora tras el paso del huracán María por Puerto Rico. “Ahora mismo es lo que me ha permitido salir a flote, desde la creación de mis tags que los hago con un sello a mano, hasta los prints de las telas que son en serigrafía. Trato de conseguir suplidores locales de materiales, pero igual fuera de la isla consigo suplidores éticamente responsables”. Aquí, la sostenibilidad es una herramienta y una ventaja dentro del mundo creativo. La idea de explotar el potencial de elementos y recursos básicos es la causante de tanta innovación chévere, inteligente y diferente. “La simpleza ha sido un aliado en estos momentos”.
Al igual que su musa, el proceso creativo de Sally Torres es uno bien orgánico. “Diseño pequeñas cápsulas de seis a ocho modelos nuevos… muchas veces es un proceso lineal en cuanto a las piezas pesadas, según los textiles que consiga, un print, una textura nueva, la combinación de colores y poco a poco todo se va uniendo, según lo que tenga a la mano”. Se define el concepto inicial y luego ocurre una fusión creativa entre patrones, telas y colores que provocan los diseños divertidos (aun así elegantes), de la diseñadora local. Para Sally, el mood perfecto para hacer magia en su taller “es mañanero, con luz solar, silencio y solo escuchar el sonido de los árboles”. Su vibe ideal es uno sencillo, mas no es el único, pues en ocasiones uno se adapta al ambiente/a los factores cambiantes, como el stress y el tiempo; lo que la artista comenta entre risas que “es parte de”.
Todo buen artista, tiene buenos diseños. Todo buen diseño, tiene un buen concepto. Y todo buen concepto tiene potencial infinito en su campo debido a sus principios y normas creativas. La moda de Sally Torres Vega tiene un concepto sencillo: piezas únicas, elegantes, cómodas, sustentables y de gran calidad. Sin duda, no es tarea fácil, pero tampoco imposible, pues la artista utiliza su ingenio creativo para sorprender a su clientela y al mundo de la moda. A good design is much more than an attractive aesthetic and its functionality. A good design is one that pays close attention to all of its components, including its material, the production process, and even environmental responsibility and awareness. That is the case of the pieces created by Puerto Rican fashion designer Sally Torres Vega. Her creations are aesthetically minimalist and innovative; functionally comfortable and practical, and made with sustainable materials. The artist creates her own inks and fabrics out of organic materials. Minimalism, elegance, and innovation are a constant when it comes to her work.
Like every artist and/or designer, Sally Torres Vega is known for her unique style, which is “a relaxed, a-temporal and neat one, where every piece functions individually, therefore each client can individualize it according to their personal style (I love seeing how people utilize the pieces in different ways).” For her, each client creates their own masterpiece, their own art composition. STV’s pieces cater to women who enjoy dressing for themselves and not to please others." Her female clientele is usually creative, fun and in search of a "wow factor" with minimalist qualities.
The inspiration for her designs comes from different sources: from "the materials I get, an artifact, silhouettes that I find and most of the time, the different needs that arise, like the need for something wider, longer, or shorter. And so on…” The source of her inspiration is the result of a creative play between the availability of the inspiring material/object and her ingenuity in action. Sustainability plays a primordial and distinctive role in her designs. Even more so now that Hurricane Maria has hit Puerto Rico. "What has allowed me to stay afloat right now is the way that I create my labels (I stamp them by hand), and the prints of the fabrics that are made in serigraphy. I try to get local suppliers, but I also buy from suppliers outside the island that are ethically responsible." So undeniably, sustainability is a tool and an advantage within the creative world. The idea of exploiting the potential of basic elements and resources is the cause for such a cool, intelligent and different innovation. "Simplicity has been an ally in these times."
Similar to her muse, the creative process of Sally Torres is a very organic one. She designs “small capsules ranging from six to eight new models... a lot of times, it is a linear process in terms of the heavy parts, depending on the textiles I get, a print, a new texture, the combination of colors, and little by little everything comes together, flowing with what I have at hand.” The initial concept is defined, and then a creative fusion takes between patterns, fabrics and colors takes place. One that brings the fun, yet elegant designs of the local designer to life. For Sally, the perfect mood to work her magic in her workshop "is in the morning, with sunlight, silence and only listening to the sound of the trees." Her ideal vibe is a simple one, yet she’s not afraid to stray from it, due the environment and changing factors, such as stress and time, both of which one adapts to. As the artist herself comments, among laughs: "it’s all part of the process.”
Every good artist has good designs; every good design has a good concept; and, every good concept has an infinite potential in its field, due to its creative principles and norms. Sally Torres’ fashion has a simple concept: elegant, comfortable, sustainable, unique, great quality pieces. Without a doubt, it is not an easy task, but it’s definitely not impossible. The artist uses her creative ingenuity to surprise her clientele and the fashion world.
