In recent years [finally] very good documentaries on fashion consuming and the serious problems facing the industry in general have been made. Films are a visual and much easier way of communicating a problem that is quite complex and difficult to explain. This 2017 lets start the year with goals to consume less and understand the importance of doing so. Here I share the most important documentaries on fashion and sustainability that I always require my students to see.

To get started:

Documentaries to discover the world of fashion behind the scenes

1. The Story Of Stuff: This video is not in fashion specifically, but it is extremely relevant. Since 2009 the organization Story of Suff has turned from a short 20 minutes into a complete movement that invites everyone to think: What do I need? How much do I need? How do I do what I need? And where do things go after I no longer use them?

2. River Blue: River Blue is a documentary that talks about water, the world's need for clean water and how the fashion industry intervenes in that ecosystem. For movie screenings click here.

3. The True Cost: This documentary, available on Netflix, is one of the pioneers of its kind and touches on all subjects: human rights, environment and consumption patterns.

4. The Fake Trade: In here they talk about the direct relationship between imitations of branded accessories and trafficking of human beings; How one industry feeds the other.

5. Cotton Road: This beautiful film was presented by Fashion Revolution Puerto Rico last year during Fashion Revolution Day.

Maybe, when you finish seeing them all, you'll feel a little overwhelmed with all this new information versus your closet full of clothes... It is a normal reaction, however I invite you to open the doors to innovation and create solutions, since to solve a problem first you have to understand it. If you want to hear about all the positive things going on in the industry, the AWEARWORLD Conscious Chatter podcast touches on new topics of sustainability, fashion, innovation and progress every week.
