La vida está llena de capas que vamos plasmando en un conjunto de formas y texturas que nos permite inventar, aprender y experimentar hasta lograr nuestra gran obra. Así podemos describir la misión de Edwin Maurás, artista plástico apasionado por la magia de lo abstracto que busca dar un giro diferente al arte repleto de posibilidades, interpretaciones y conversaciones entretenidas.
“El arte lo llevo en la sangre, prácticamente desde que nací, mi papá es pintor y mi mamá es artista gráfico, podrás imaginar todo lo que hice en mi infancia…mis padres no me pusieron limitaciones”, expresó el joven artista que posee un Bachillerato en Arte y Tecnología de la Universidad de Puerto Rico Recinto de Río Piedras.
¿De dónde sale tu inspiración?
Me gusta soñar de día, soy bien imaginativo. Me encanta observar los detalles de mi alrededor como edificios, árboles, animales, etc. Cuando era pequeño jugaba con bloques, pero ya los encuentro cuadrados (ríe). Me gusta poder moldear, romper, rehacer y volver a empezar. Mientras más lo haga, más creativo me siento.
¿Qué influencias claves has tenido para definir tu arte?
Mi estilo se definió en los últimos años con una clase que tomé con el maestro y artista puertorriqueño Néstor Millán. Antes trabajaba figurativos, pero no me gustaba y era aburrido. La clase, aunque trabajaba en papel, me permitía la posibilidad de imaginar los elementos que flotarán en el aire utilizando formas limpias, colores sencillos, degradaciones, líneas, el contraste del blanco y negro, decoloraciones y puntillismo. Fue la composición y el juego de la construcción con diferentes tipos de materiales lo que me cautivó.
¿Cómo describes tu técnica y estilo?
Me gusta explorar diferentes medios como la construcción, la escultura y la pintura por la diversidad de lenguajes y el juego de capas con diferentes materiales. No me enfoco en los colores, mi prioridad es la estructura, conseguir el balance, el concepto, su composición… ese resultado de interpretaciones. Ese ensamblaje logra resaltar un diseño de una forma dinámica que capta la atención. En ese juego de capas descubrí que la sombra representa un papel protagónico en mi arte.
¿Con quién te identificas y qué otros artistas admiras su obra?
Mi influencia pictórica es mi padre… el me dio la base. Aparte de él, mis favoritos fuera del mapa se encuentran las composiciones en sus colores y texturas de Wassily Kandinsky, Alexander Calder y Arshile Gorky.
¿Hay algún mensaje que desees llevar a través de tu obra?
No, nada oculto; por el contrario, me gusta que el público vaya a mis obras sin prejuicios, no quiero alterar ese encuentro visual del observador. Por eso no coloco nombres ni sigo patrones, me gusta la gente que entre a ver mi obra con un pensamiento transparente, sin influencias…como los niños.
¿Qué planes futuros tienes?
Tuve la oportunidad de exponer en galerías, pero la más simbólica fue con mi padre, Edwin Maurás Modesti en un Taller de Fotoperiodismo en el 2015 y eso fue un gran orgullo. Quisiera exponer mi obra internacionalmente y tener la posibilidad de conocer el mundo… No descarto hacer residencia en otros países para continuar estudiando y vender mis obras.
¿Qué es lo más difícil de ser un artista?
Curiosamente, la parte más difícil es la parte creativa porque tardo días en sacar la idea, pero es la más que disfruto. Me llena. La parte de construir es fácil. Pero entre una tacita de café, unos ejercicios matutinos observando mis alrededores y muchos papeles en blancos activan mis niveles de imaginación.
¿Sobrevives en estos tiempos?
Sí (entre risas). Vivimos en tiempos bien difíciles, y conseguir algo es mucho más complicado que antes. Hay que pensar los pasos y las ramificaciones de cada decisión. Tengo la dicha de que mis padres me han apoyado siempre para desarrollarme en lo que me gusta. No necesito mucho…si tengo que vender mi carro para irme a realizar una residencia en Europa que contribuya a mi crecimiento como artista lo hago y no me detengo.
Actualmente, su obra está exhibiéndose en la Galería Artífice en el Viejo San Juan. Edwin Maurás plasma la importancia de las capas en su arte para lograr la composición perfecta. La similitud de su arte con la vida misma nos detiene a evaluar esas diferentes texturas que añadimos y definen nuestro futuro.
MEET EDWIN MAURÁS... LAYERED ART
Life is full of layers that we are shaping in a set of shapes and textures that allows us to invent, learn and experience until we achieve our great work. Thus we can describe the mission of Edwin Maurás, a plastic artist passionate for the magic of the abstract that seeks to give a different twist to art full of possibilities, interpretations and entertaining conversations.
"My art is in my blood, practically since I was born, my father is a painter and my mother is a graphic artist, you must imagine everything I did in my childhood ... my parents did not put limitations on me," said the young artist who owns a Degree in Art and Technology from the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras campus.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I like day dreaming, I'm very imaginative. I love to observe the details around me like buildings, trees, animals, etc. When I was little I played with blocks, but I already find them square (laughs). I like to be able to mold, break, redo and start over. The more I do, the more creative I feel.
What key influences have you had to define your art?
My style was defined in recent years with a class I took with Puerto Rican maestro and artist Néstor Millán. I used to work figuratively, but I did not like it and it was boring. The class, although working on paper, allowed me the possibility of imagining the elements that would float in the air using clean forms, simple colors, degradations, lines, the contrast of black and white, discolorations and pointillism. It was the composition and play of construction with different types of materials that captivated me.
How would you describe your technique and style?
I like to explore different media such as construction, sculpture and painting for the diversity of languages and the game of layers with different materials. I do not focus on the colors, my priority is the structure, the balance, the concept, its composition ... that result of interpretations. That assembly manages to highlight a design in a dynamic way that captures attention. In that set of layers I discovered that the shadow plays a leading role in my art ".
With whom do you identify and what other artists do you admire his work?
My pictorial influence is my father ... he gave me the basis. Apart from it, my favorites off the map are the compositions in their colors and textures of Wassily Kandinsky, Alexander Calder and Arshile Gorky.
Is there any message you want to carry through your work?
No, nothing hidden; On the contrary, I like the public to go to my works without prejudice, I do not want to alter that visual encounter of the observer. That's why I do not put names or follow patterns, I like people who come to see my work with a transparent thought, without influences ... like children.
What future plans do you have?
I had the opportunity to exhibit in galleries, but the most symbolic was with my father, Edwin Maurás Modesti in a Photojournalism Workshop in 2015 and that was a great pride. I would like to present my work internationally and have the opportunity to know the world ... I do not rule out residency in other countries to continue studying and selling my works.
What is the most difficult thing about being an artist? Curiously, the hard part is the creative part because it takes days to get the idea, but it's the most I enjoy. It fills me up. The building part is easy. But between a cup of coffee, morning exercises watching my surroundings and many white papers activate my levels of imagination.
Do you survive in these times? Yes (laughs). We live in very difficult times, and getting something is much more complicated than before. You have to think about the steps and ramifications of each decision. I have the happiness that my parents have always supported me to develop in what I like. I do not need much ... if I have to sell my car to go to a residence in Europe that contributes to my growth as an artist I do it and I do not stop.
Currently, his work is being exhibited at Artífice art gallery in Old San Juan. Edwin Maurás captures the importance of the layers in his art to achieve the perfect composition. The similarity of his art with life itself stops us to evaluate those different textures that we add and define our future.
