Utilizando el arte como herramienta para concientizar, el fotógrafo puertorriqueño Herminio Rodríguez manifiesta su activismo con la serie de fotografías CONTAMINADOS, en apoyo a la lucha contra el depósito de cenizas en Peñuelas por parte de la compañía Applied Energy Systems (AES); conflicto que ha impactado una gran cantidad de comunidades adyacentes a Peñuelas y probablemente muchos otros puntos a través de la Isla, provocando una alta en incidencias de abortos y enfermedades respiratorias.
Herminio dirige su lente a la injusticia que se comete contra la gente del pueblo de Peñuelas, creando esta serie de fotografías con diversas figuras públicas donde todos se cubren con cenizas. El fotógrafo logra transmitir la frustración de los ciudadanos, a través de la genial interpretación de éstas celebridades puertorriqueñas quienes en cada foto representan los diferentes tipos de personas afectadas, que en fin somos todos, y los distintos escenarios que los más afectados se encuentran viviendo en estos momentos: desconocidas tristes realidades, que han sido y siguen siendo ignoradas.
Este pasado 19 de diciembre, el Tribunal Supremo de Puerto Rico falló a favor del municipio de Peñuelas, reconociendo la autoridad que tiene el mismo para prohibir el depósito de las cenizas dentro de sus límites territoriales. Líderes de esta manifestación, como la activista María de Lourdes Santiago y el alcalde de Peñuelas, Walter Torres Maldonado, han exhortado, por otros medios, a mantenerse alerta y, a que los municipios en los que hay vertederos, tomen las debidas precauciones legales, pues a pesar del fallo del Tribunal Supremo, la resistencia debe continuar.

Herminio RodrÍguez Raises Awareness With His Series: CONTAMINADOS
Using art as a tool for raising awareness, Puerto Rican photographer Herminio Rodríguez, manifests his activism with the photographic series CONTAMINADOS (Contaminated), in support to the fight against the ash deposit in Peñuelas by the company Applied Energy Systems (AES); conflict that has impacted a great amount of adjacent communities to Peñuelas and probably many other points through the island, provoking a higher incidence of abortions and respiratory illnesses.
Herminio directs his lens to the injustice that is committed against the people of the town of Peñuelas, creating a series of photographs of diverse public figures where all get covered with ashes. The photographer is able to transmit the frustration of the citizens, through the genius interpretation of these Puerto Rican celebrities that represent, in each photo, the different types of affected people, that at the end are all of us, and the diverse scenarios that the most affected are currently living at the moment: unknown sad realities that have been and continue to be ignored.
The past December 19, the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico ruled in favor of the municipality of Peñuelas, recognizing its authority to prohibit the deposit of ashes within its territorial limits. Leaders of this demonstration, such as the activist María de Lourdes Santiago and the mayor of Peñuelas, Walter Torres Maldonado, have urged, by other means, to other municipalities that have landfills to be alert, take legal precautions, and the municipalities in which there are landfills, take due legal precautions, because despite the ruling of the Court, the resistance must continue.
