Adriana Vázquez Acevedo es una fotógrafa autodidacta cuya curiosidad la lleva a explorar las posibilidades de lo que nos rodea. La adaptación de una persona a un lugar con el cual no se ha interactuado en mucho tiempo es la raíz de su última serie fotográfica titulada “Vacant”.
¿Cómo surge tu interés por la fotografía?
Para el 2009 - 2010, tuve una cámara digital Fujifilm que empecé a llevar a todos lados, incluyendo un viaje. Fue [ahí] cuando empecé a darme cuenta de que me interesaba, ya que sacaba muchísimas fotos, especialmente de pequeños detalles. Simplemente me enamoré de la manera en que se ven las cosas a través de una cámara. Para el 2011 tuve la oportunidad de utilizar una DSLR y en el 2013 mis padres me regalaron una Canon Rebel t3i, que es la que actualmente uso. Lo primero que hice fue poner todo en manual y aprender a la mala, ya que no tenía quién me enseñara ni el dinero para tomar cursos.
Al llegar a la universidad supe que a lo que me quería dedicar era a la fotografía. No fue hasta el 2015 que pude tomar la primera clase de fotografía en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas, donde nació mi interés por fotografiar el cuerpo humano, y [ahí es que] mi estilo cambió.
¿Qué te inspiró a hacer la serie fotográfica VACANT y por qué la titulas de esa manera?
Anteriormente había visto una foto de un cuarto del Hotel Normandie y me llegó una imagen específica a la mente. Así que fui en busqueda de ella, pero terminé encontrando mejores resultados. Fue al llegar al lugar cuando realmente me inspiré. Estuvimos horas explorando en un lugar totalmente vacante, utilizando todo lo que habían dejado atrás. Le dimos uso y cierta belleza a algo abandonado y que básicamente había estado inutilizado por tantos años.
Artísticamente siempre he tenido como meta mostrar las posibilidades de todo lo que nos rodea y la importancia de explorarlas. La serie trata sobre cómo nos adaptamos y nos volvemos parte de un lugar con el cual no se ha interactuado de esta manera. Normalmente los lugares abandonados los utilizan para vandalizar, y este hotel es un buen ejemplo de esto; cuando realmente tiene muchas probabilidades. El nombre fue un brainstorming de un día completo que comenzó siendo inspirado por los letreros de Vacancy y No Vacancy en los hoteles.
¿Hay alguna razón por la que el sujeto nunca muestra su cara en las fotos?
Sí. Realmente es una manera de cancelar la expresión del sujeto, ya que una persona vacante es una persona sin expresión ni emoción alguna; alguien ausente mentalmente. Es sobre una persona vacante en un lugar vacante. Te obliga a leer la expresión de su cuerpo en vez de su cara.
¿En qué estás trabajando en el momento?
Por el momento tengo muchas ideas escritas, con el concepto en construcción. No he tenido mucho tiempo para trabajar en ellas, pero pronto les daré seguimiento. El proyecto más claro que tengo se basa en la búsqueda de altos contrastes entre el cuerpo humano y la naturaleza, ya sea en forma y/o color. Ando en búsqueda de lugares que puedan aportar al concepto.

Angelis Laboy es mi mejor amiga (fotógrafa, igualmente) y casi siempre la utilizo como modelo; siempre entiende lo que estoy buscando. Un trabajo con Angelis es sumamente colaborativo ya que tiene muy buen ojo. Es una persona que siempre anda con su cámara, no importa a dónde vaya. Normalmente anda detrás de la cámara, pero cuando le escribo para un proyecto, siempre está dispuesta. Hace lo que sea por lograr lo que busco o buscamos.

Adriana Vázquez Acevedo is a self-taught photographer who’s curiosity leads her to explore the possibilities of the places that surround us. Taking people to places that have not been visited in a long time and been in abandonment is the root of her last photographic series titled VACANT.
How did you become interested in photography?
In 2009-2010, I had a Fujifilm digital camera that I started to take everywhere with me, including a trip. It was [there] that I started to realize that I was interested in photographing small details (since I took a lot of photos) and I fell in love with the way things look through a camera. In 2011 I had the opportunity to use a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera and later in 2013 my parents gave me a Canon Rebel t3i. The first thingI did was put the camera in Manual mode and started shooting. I learned this was good and bad, since I had no one to teach me or did I have the money to take courses.
When I arrived at university I knew that what I wanted to dedicate myself to was to photography. It was not until 2015 that I was able to take my first photography at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas (EAP), which is where my interest in photographing the human body was born, and that [was when] my style changed.
What inspired you to do VACANT photo series and why did you title it that way?
I had previously seen a photo of a room of the Normandie hotel and a concrete image to mind instantly. So I went in search for it, but ended up finding even better results. It was when we got there when I got really inspired. We explored a totally vacant place for hours, using everything others had left behind. We gave these spaces use and found certain beauty in something abandoned that had been unused for so many years.
Artistically I have always had as goal to show the possibilities of everything that surrounds us as well as the importance of images. The series is about how we adapt and become part of a place with which there is no interaction in this way. Usually abandoned places are used to vandalize, and this hotel is a good example of this, but in reality it is a place that has a lot of possibilities.
The name was conceived after brainstorming and being inspired by the “Vacancy” and “No Vacancy” signs in hotels.
Is there a reason why the subject never shows her face in the photos?
Yes, it really is a way to cancel the expression of the subject, since a person is vacant is a person without expression or emotion, someone is mentally absent, it is about a vacant person in a vacant place.
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I have many ideas written down, with most concepts under construction." I don’t have a lot of time to work on them, but I know that will change soon I will follow up with these projects. "The clearest project I have at the moment is based in the search for high contrasts between the human body and Nature and the sea in shape or color. I am in search of places that other users can contribute to the concept.

She does a great job and is extremely collaborative as well as having a very good eye. She always carries her camera with her, no matter where she goes. She is normally seen behind the camera but when I reach out to her for a project, she is always ready. She does whatever needs to be done to achieve what I seek.
