El domingo 11 de Diciembre, se celebró la fiesta que le dió comienzo a lo que será MECA Intrernational Art Fair, que por sus siglas sirve de abreviatura para Mercado Caribeño y se llevará a cabo del 1 al 4 de junio de 2017 en la institución de educación superior, el Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico, ubicado en un sector histórico de Santurce en San Juan.
Desde artistas de todas las disciplinas y esenciales entusiastas, hasta los fundadores de MECA, nos dimos cita en ese pequeño oasis en apoyo a la gran gestión. Comenzando la noche pudimos intercambiar algunas palabras con Tony Rodríguez, uno de los co-fundadores de la feria. Nos interesaba saber qué los había motivado a moverse en esta dirección. Al respecto y entre otros detalles,Tony comentó: “MECA comienza al ver todas las iniciativas, auto gestiones y espacios alternativos que están surgiendo de artistas para artistas. En otras palabras, surge como parte de una gestión para fortalecer y apoyar un mercado de arte que merece ver el fruto de su arduo y admirable trabajo para que continue creciendo, manteniendo el flujo de las iniciativas ya tomadas y seguir creando."
El también artista ha hecho un intérvalo en su carrera personal para poder invertir todas sus energías en este proyecto. También fue quien conceptualizó el logo de la feria, cuyo diseño es creación de Josué Oquendo, y el cual representa el cordero acostado del escudo de Puerto Rico; uno que ha puesto la mente de muchos a correr. “El detalle aquí es que el cordero está de pie, así que es como un tipo de resistencia, ese es el simbolismo inicial. El otro es que siempre ha sido el animal de sacrificio y representa el sacrificio de todos estos años de autogestión de toda la escena.” aclaró Tony.
En contraste con pasadas ferias y eventos de arte en Puerto Rico, “MECA es una experiencia para los cinco sentidos” expresó Mariángel Catalina Gonzales, productora y project manager del evento, porque se extiende más allá de reunir una buena oferta de arte contemporáneo. También encontrarás música, gastronomía, y la oportunidad de poder pasearte por galerías, espacios alternativos y negocios locales de comida y bebida que se encontrarán en las áreas limítrofes a la Feria y estarán esperando por ti como parte de la oferta del evento y en saludo a MECA.
MECA será el encuentro por excelencia para el mercado del arte caribeño compuesto por una gran variedad de artistas y galerías jóvenes, haciendo que el arte, por consecuencia, sea más accesible. El objetivo principal es crear nuevos coleccionistas y educar en favor a la inversión en el arte, un creciente mercado con grandes oportunidades de beneficio estratégico rentable en el cual vale la pena invertir hoy más que nunca.
En cuanto a la localización, el hecho de que sea en el Conservatorio de Música, hace a MECA sobresaliente entre muchas ferias del mundo, pues le da una personalidad propia. “Realmente queremos que el que visite tenga una experiencia de feria diferente, que no sea el típico Convention Center, pues todos se sienten igual. Es algo que tú dices: “Wow, estoy en otro país, estoy en México, en Bogotá, en Buenos Aires y el feeling es exactamente el mismo. Por eso decidimos hacer algo donde de verdad sientas que llegaste a otro lugar.” dijo Tony.
Como si fuera poco, la feria contará con una guía turística, trabajada directamente por la productora, Mariángel. La guía abarcará todo el área metro desde San Juan hasta Cupey con un repertorio de galerías, parques, museos, restaurantes y farmacias locales, entre otros lugares esenciales a la hora de viajar, que añadirá valor a toda la experiencia y el turismo en Puerto Rico.“Viví muchos años en Nueva York, viví catorce años ahí, y a cada rato me preguntaban: ¿a dónde voy? ¿dónde como chévere? ¿dónde puedo sacar mi laptop? y lo mismo me preguntan aquí. Por lo tanto, sé que es algo que definitivamente va a tener un servicio.” dijo Mariángel.
La guía ha sido curada por ellos mismos, asegurando que el turista, no importa si es de Ponce o de Noruega, tenga una experiencia sumamente agradable y única.
“La idea es que en esa semana de la feria todo el mundo (negocios, museos, etc.) esté involucrado y te esté apoyando en el proyecto, por ejemplo, si te estamos incluyendo en la guía, pues igualmente tú lo promocionas porque el proyecto no se está haciendo exclusivo para el ambiente artístico, sino que quiere ayudar a que haya un impacto económico en el todo el área.” nos explicó Tony.
MECA International Art Fair será una cita obligada del 1 al 4 de junio de 2017 que contará con los mejores artistas locales e internacionales cuya oferta artística se podrá admirar y adquirir. Será el punto de partida hacia un fin de semana lleno de arte y las mejores experiencias gastronómicas y locales. Con esta feria, el mercado de arte puertorriqueño se verá estimulado grandemente y Puerto Rico y sus artistas se encontrarán más expuestos al mercado internacional.

On Sunday, December 11th in Jungle Bird Bar in Santurce, Puerto Rico, took place the party that marked as the beginning of what MECA International Art Fair will be. MECA, short name for Mercado Caribeño (Caribbean Market) will take place at the higher education institution, the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, also located in Santurce, in 2017, from June 1st to the 4th.
From artists of all disciplines, and essential enthusiasts, to the Founders of MECA, we all met in that small oasis in support to the great operation. At the beginning of the evening, we could exchange a couple of words with Tony Rodríguez, co-founder of the Art Fair. We wanted to know what had motivated them into taking this direction. About it and other details, Tony commented: “MECA starts when seeing all of the initiatives, self managed projects and alternative spaces that are currently emerging from artists for artists. In other words, starts as part of a deed to strengthen and support an art market that deserves to see the fruition of its hard and admirable work to be able to continue growing, keeping the flow of the already taken initiatives and keep creating”.
The also artist, has made a pause in his personal career to invest all his energies in this project. He’s the one that conceptualized the logo of the fair, which was then designed by Josué Oquendo. It represents the resting lamb from the emblematic shield of Puerto Rico; an artwork that has made people think.
“The detail here is that the lamb is standing, so it represents a sort of resistance, that’s the main symbolism. The other thing is that it has always been the animal of sacrifice and it represents the sacrifice of all these years of self-management of the art scene.” Tony clarified.
In contrast to past fairs and art events here in Puerto Rico, “MECA is an experience for all five senses”, expressed Mariángel Catalina González, producer and project manager of this great event. Because it is far much more than just putting together a great offer of contemporary art, you will also find music, gastronomy and the opportunity to take a walk around galleries, alternative spaces and local businesses of food and drink that will be within the adjacent area to the fair that’ll be waiting for you as part of the event’s offer and in salute to MECA.
MECA will be the encounter by excellence for the Caribbean art market, made up of a great variety of young artists and galleries; consequently, making local art to be more accessible. The main objective is to create new collectors and educate in favor of the investment in art, a growing market with great beneficially strategic profitable opportunities that are worth investing in, more than ever.
In relation to the location, the fact that will take place in the Conservatory of Music, already makes MECA stand out from many fairs in the world, by the unique personality it gives to it. “We really want for the visitor to have a different fair experience, that isn’t the typical Convention Center one that make all feel the same. Is something that makes you feel like: “Wow, I’m in another country, I’m in Mexico, Bogotá, Buenos Aires and the feeling is exactly the same. That’s why we decided to make something that truly makes you feel somewhere else.”, said Tony.
As if it weren’t enough, the fair will provide a touristic guide, worked directly by the producer, Mariángel. The guide will cover all the metropolitan area from San Juan to Cupey with a great repertory of galleries, parks, museums, restaurants and local drugstores, among other travel essential spots, that’ll add value to the whole experience and tourism in Puerto Rico.“I lived many years in New York, I lived fourteen years there, and people asked me a lot: Where should I go? Where’s good food? Where can I take my laptop to? and is the same here. Thus, I know is something that’ll have a service”. said Mariángel.
The guide has been curated by themselves, assuring the tourist, be it from Ponce or Norway, gets a greatly enjoyable and unique experience. “The idea is that during that week everyone (businesses, museums, etc.) is involved and supporting the project. For example, if we are including you in the guide, you equally promote us because the event is not exclusively for the art scene, but it also wants to help make an economic impact in the whole area.”, Tony explained.
MECA International Art Fair will be an obligatory destination from June 1st to June 4th of 2017 that will host the best local and international artists whose artistic offer will be available for admiring and purchasing. It will be the starting point for an adventure weekend full of art and the best local gastronomic experience. With this fair, the Puerto Rican art market will be more exposed internationally.
