Abdiel D. Segarra Ríos, el artísta, crítico, curador y gestor cultural nos convoca a frecuentar su “bitácora personal” en la pagina web/ archivo: nosetratadeganar.com/ nosetratadeganar.tumblr.com. El cual se transforma en una experiencia totalmente enriquecedora de índole documental cuyo enfoque es la escena cultural de San Juan y las artes visuales. Entiéndase: espacios alternativos, proyectos de intervención pública, ensayos críticos, reseñas y mucho más, centrados en el arte contemporáneo en Puerto Rico.
Segarra nos explica detalladamente: “No se trata de ganar, es una declaración en contra del exceso de competitividad que existe en el mundo del arte y una postura de resistencia a la banalidad y la trivialidad con la que ocasionalmente se le refiere a la actividad artística y cultural en los medios masivos de comunicación…me vi en la necesidad de crear un nuevo espacio para organizar y compartir la documentación fotográfica y las impresiones que reunía sobre las exhibiciones a las que asisto regularmente. La diferencia, es que este espacio serviría abiertamente como una bitácora que opera de acuerdo a la rúbrica de mis intereses y no a un propósito de inclusión.”
Con la intención de indagar más acerca de lo que parece ser un nuevo archivo de alto valor para el arte contemporáneo puertorriqueño, le pregunté a Segarra: ¿qué tipo de retroalimentación buscas o esperas de la audiencia? “El propósito a mediano plazo es provocar una conversación mientras se estimula la concientización sobre la importancia de levantar, ordenar y compartir documentación fotográfica sobre la actividad que se genera de manera independiente en nuestra escena cultural. A largo plazo, esa documentación será una referencia importante con multiplicidad de usos pedagógicos, históricos y en general de creación y apropiación de una memoria que regularmente pertenece a instituciones y académicos.”
En su tesis, “Un panorama de alternativas en dialogo desde Puerto Rico”, publicado por la Revista de Arte de Granada HUM 736, Papeles de cultura contemporánea, se comprende de manera mucho más clara la importancia del espacio para el artista, su lugar de exposición, cómo a partir de aquí se crean relaciones multitudinarias entre la muchedumbre y la coyuntura que conlleva tal procedimiento. Nos lleva al comienzo del año 2000, en donde sin duda alguna, existió una gran actividad en el campo de las artes visuales, al igual que eventos y plataformas hasta llegar a lo que conocemos actualmente. Se hace mención de grupos/ plataformas iniciativas dirigidas esencialmente por artistas como lo son: M&M proyectos, Chemi Rosado Seijo, Área: lugar de proyectos, =DESTO, Storehouse Group, PUBLíCA, Galería 356, TAG-Rom, Clandestino 787 o C787 (de donde nace Santurce es Ley) entre otros.
Entonces, nos preguntamos, ¿Y de qué manera esta plataforma aportará a la escena del arte local? “Ésta plataforma, al igual que muchas otras que por años han mantenido la actividades cibernética, sirve como lugar de contra-punteo para comparar y reflexionar, separado de las urgencias de la inmediatez a la vez que mantiene el eco de la actividad y colaborar en la gestión de ampliar los marcos de difusión del calendario de actividades culturales.”
Otros proyectos anteriores de Segarra lo son Conboca (www.conboca.org) y Área/ Lugar de proyectos (http://www.proyectosarea.com), que al igual de No Se Trata De Ganar demuestran ser excelentes fuentes del mundo del Arte Contemporáneo en la isla y todo lo alterno a ello.
“Por el momento, el proyecto es manejado exclusivamente por mi. Esto no quiere decir que no este inmerso en diálogos con otros colegas con intereses similares dentro y fuera de la Isla, pero en principio será un espacio para ordenar 10 años aproximadamente de documentación fotográfica que he ido acumulando, originalmente como herramienta de trabajo personal, ahora aspirando que sirva a más personas dentro y fuera de la Isla.”

This archive transforms itself unto an enriching experience with a documental nature in which the primary focus is conveyed by the field of visual arts and in the cultural scene of San Juan: alternative spaces, public intervention projects, critic essays, reviews etc. (mainly centered in Puerto Rico’s conceptual art).
Segarra explains with detail: "It’s not about winning, is a declaration against the excess of competition that exists in the art world with a posture of resistance towards the banality and triviality in which the massive media refers towards the artistic and cultural activity… I saw the need to create a new space that would organize and share the photographic documentation and impressions that I gathered from exhibitions that I regularly assisted. The difference is that this space would serve openly as a binnacle that operates in terms of the rubric of my interests and not with a purpose of inclusion."
With the intent to inquire more about what seems to be a new archive of high value for the Puerto Rican contemporary art, I asked Segarra: What type of feedback do you look for or expect from the audience? “The short term purpose is to provoke conversation, while stimulating awareness about the importance of raising, organizing and sharing photographic documentation from the independent activity that generates in the cultural scene. Long term, this documentation would serve as an important reference with multiple pedagogic and historic uses, generally in the memoric creation and appropriation, which regularly belongs to institutions and academics.”
In his thesis, “A panoramic alternative in dialogue from Puerto Rico” published by the magazine of art of Granada HUM 736, Papeles de cultura contemporánea (HUM 736, Papers of Contemporary Culture) the comprehension in the importance of the artist’s space and venue of exposition, becomes clearer, and how through this, prolific relations are created between the masses and the procedure that partakes such. It also brings us back to the year 2000 where, without a doubt, in that time existed great activity in the field of visual arts as with events and platforms which led to what we know now. It also gives mention of groups and platforms of initiatives managed essentially by artists like: M7M proyectos (M&M Projects), Chemi Rosado Seijo, Área: lugar de proyectos (Area: Project’s Place), =DESTO, Storehouse Group, PUBLíCA (PUBLIC), Galeria 356 (356 Gallery), TAG-Rom, Clandestino 787 (Clandestine 787) or C787 [which is where Santurce es Ley (Santurce is the Law) was born] among others.
Then, the question arises, “In which way would this platform contribute towards the local art scene?” Segarra answers, “This platform, just like any other that during the years has maintained its online activities, serves as a place to counterpoint in order to reflect and contrast, separated from the immediate urgency, while still maintaining the activity’s echo and collaboration in the management of enhancing the areas of diffusion in the calendar of cultural activities.
"Conboca" or Withmouth (www.conboca.org) and "Área/ Lugar de proyectos" or Area/ Project’s Place (http://www.proyectosarea.com), are other projects before Segarra’s, which just like “No Se Trata de Ganar (It’s Not About Winning)” have proven to be excellent sources in the world of contemporary art in the island and alternative spaces.
“For the moment this project is managed exclusively by me. This doesn’t mean that I’m not immerse in dialogues with other colleagues with similar interests (in and out of the island), but in the beginning it’ll be a space to organize approximately 10 years of photographic documentation that’s been accumulating; originally as a tool for personal work and aspiring to serve more people in and out of the island.
