Larissa "Lala Love" de Jesús
Artista joven de veintidós años, nacida en Puerto Rico. Ha estudiado y desarrollado su pasión por el arte por doce años y se ha encaminado en temas como la feminidad y las condiciones de la mujer en la sociedad moderna por cuatro años. Establecida en la ciudad de Nueva York donde aún continúa sus estudios en las artes plásticas, experimenta con otros campos como la fotografía y el arte digital. Larissa, demostrándonos un talento innato y en pleno desarrollo, decidimos hacerle una serie de preguntas para conocer más a fondo su historia e inspiraciones.
¿Desde cuándo practicas el arte? y ¿En qué te enfocas?
Larissa: Llevo cogiendo clases de arte desde los nueve años. Desde muy pequeña mi tía me entretenía haciendo dibujitos de personas, carritos y perritos. Fueron estos detallitos de su parte lo que me llevó a tener un interés en poder crear y potencialmente impresionar a otros como ella me impresionaba a mi con las cosas más simples. Mi práctica mayormente depende de mi estado de ánimo o la técnica que mejor represente lo que quiero comunicar, sea la fotografía, el dibujo, la pintura o la interacción social. Actualmente estoy utilizando múltiples medios para crear pinturas.
¿Qué te inspira?
Larissa: El ser una mujer puertorriqueña y ser el feminista, no diría que me inspira pero definitivamente me motiva grandemente a hablar de mi cultura, me lleva a contrastar el maltrato que pasaron las mujeres puertorriqueñas en los 40's y 50's con el maltrato y discriminación que existe todavía, incluso a un nivel global. Al mismo tiempo sirviendo de herramienta empoderadora para la mujer.
Como artista emergente, ¿Qué es lo más arduo que has enfrentado?
Larissa: En un mundo sobre saturado de personas que aspiran a ser artistas, se confunde mucho lo que es autenticidad y crear una formula o lo que es caer en un "comfort zone" que te haga vender. Muchas veces este tipo de artista, quien replica dicha formula constantemente, llama mas la atención que un artista que carga un pensamiento crítico tras el transcurso de su trabajo
¿Qué medios son los que más te gusta trabajar?
Larissa: Mis medios preferidos, en el momento, son pintura en aceite y fotografía.
¿Hay alguna técnica en particular que practicas con mayor frecuencia o desees dominar?
Larissa: Mi meta siempre ha sido dominar el hyperrealismo pictórico y poco a poco me he ido inclinando más a él en la fotografia, al crear escenarios y momentos narrativos en fotos.
¿Qué dirías que es lo más complicado dentro de tus procesos creativos? y ¿Qué sería lo más que disfrutas?
Larissa: Diría que lo más complicado es salir de mi “comfort zone”, sea con grandes formatos o con medios nuevos. Aparte de eso, algo que siempre es difícil es el encontrar un temática que me apasione y me inspire a empezar a trabajar. Una de las cosas que disfruto es empezar mis pinturas porque tengo ese sentimiento que voy a crear algo nuevo para el mundo. Yo veo el empezar una pintura como caer de parto y todo el proceso de pintar es el proceso de empujar, creer que no vas a poder terminar y querer rendirte pero sigues porque sabes que todo ese trabajo y tiempo invertido valdrá la pena cuando veas el resultado final. Cuando no estoy pintando, amo el proceso de crear ambientes con luces, encontrar gente interesante para retratar y hacer research.
¿Te gustaría colaborar con otros artistas? ¿Con qué artistas te gustaría colaborar más adelante?
Larissa:No estoy pensando en colaborar porque es más importante para mi entender y crecer sola antes que
cualquier colaboración. Pero quién sabe, a lo mejor llega una persona que complemente mi trabajo y
yo el de el/ella a un nivel que no pueda decir que no.
No pude evitar notar que Larissa tiene mucho estilo, ¿Trabajarías en otros campos como la moda?
Larissa: Gracias por eso! Pues sí, soy amante a la moda y me encantaría aprender a coser pero ahora mismo
no tengo el tiempo para invertir en eso, y para hacer algo mediocre, mejor no hago nada.
¿Cómo ha sido tu experiencia desarrollándote en Nueva York?
Larissa: Mudarme para New York fue la mejor decisión que he tomado en mi vida. New York me ha hecho ver el arte de mil perspectivas diferentes y me ha dado la oportunidad de conocer a mis artistas favoritos e ir
a los mejores museos y galerías y me ha hecho madurar como persona y como artista. New York, aunque
es el mejor lugar para un artista estar, es un lugar que te hace sentir muy solo y esa el la parte que
Hollywood no te vende. Cuando estoy en New York mis piezas tienden a coger un giro a la morbosidad y a
la nostalgia porque la soledad influye mucho en mi trabajo, también el hecho de que extraño a muerte la
idea de mi Isla.
¿Tienes planes de regresar a Puerto Rico? ¿Por qué?
Larissa: Puerto Rico es mi lugar preferido en el mundo y no descarto el regresar. Pero por el momento deseo
seguir explorando nuevas áreas para nunca parar de crecer como artista.
¿Cuál es tu objetivo con el arte? y ¿Cuál es tu mayor aspiración?
Larissa: Con mis trabajos recientes pretendo comunicar un mensaje de empoderamiento hacia la mujer. Quiero que a través de mis ilustraciones y pinturas el espectador sienta lo que es ser mujer en una sociedad dominada por el patriarcado. El ser mujer va mas allá del físico y lo que la sociedad ha definido como ser “mujer”, en mi opinión, el ser mujer es obtener el balance perfecto entre fuerza y ternura. Mi trabajo es la exaltación y la crítica de la importancia de belleza estética en nuestra sociedad; explorando ideas sobre como nuestra obsesión por la búsqueda de ésta belleza es lo que desafortunadamente ha definido el ser mujer. Mi mayor aspiración es que la gente pueda distinguir lo que es un pensamiento o una actitud machista y que quieran cambiarla. El ser feminista no se trata de poner a la mujer en alto, se trata de querer lo mismo para un hombre que para una mujer, las misma oportunidades, los mismos valores, las mismas expectativas, se trata de querer igualdad.
Meet Larissa de Jesús: Artist That Explores The Conditions Of Women In Modern Society
Larissa “Lala Love” de Jesus
Larissa is a twenty-two year old, young artist, born in Puerto Rico. For twelve years she studied and developed a passion for the arts and for four years journeyed her way over to subjects like femininity and the conditions of women in modern society. She’s established in the city of New York where she’s currently studying plastic arts and exploring other fields like photography and digital art. Larissa, demonstrating us to have an innate talent and being in a state of full growth, we decided to make her a series of questions to know more about her story in depth and inspirations.
Since when you've been practicing the arts? and what’s your focus?
Larissa: I’ve been taking art classes since I was nine years old. When I was little my aunt entertained me by making drawings of people, cars and dogs. That took an interest in me to create and impress others like she impressed me at that given moment in time. My change of practice depends on my mood or the technique that best represents what I want to communicate; it may be photography, drawing, paint or social interaction. Right now I’m using different mediums to create paintings.
What inspires you?
Larissa: Being a Puerto Rican feminist woman, I wouldn’t say that it inspires me but it definitely influences me greatly to talk about my culture. It motivates me to contrast the abuse that Puerto Rican women went through on the 40’s and 50’s with the discrimination that still exists today, even on a global scale. At the same time it is an empowering tool for women.
As an emerging artist; what’s the toughest thing you’ve come up front with?
Larissa: In a world where it is over-saturated with people who aspire to be artists, it confuses me a lot the authenticity in repeating the same formula. A lot of times, this type of artist, who replicates constantly such formula calls out more the attention than the artist who elaborates critical thinking during the course of his work.
What mediums are the one you prefer to work with?
Larissa: At the moment, my preferred mediums are oil paint and photography.
Is there a particular technique that you frequently practice or want to dominate?
Larissa: My goal has always been to dominate the pictorial hyper-realism, and I have been slowly inclining more into it in photography by creating narrative scenarios and moments in photographs.
What would you say is most complicated during your creative process? and what do you enjoy most?
Larissa: I would say that the most complicated thing would be to get out of my comfort zone; it may be with large formats or new mediums like spray paint. I enjoy most starting my paintings because I get that feeling that I’m going to create something new for the world. I see the starting of a painting like giving birth, and all that process of painting is like the process of pushing, you think you’re never going to finish and you want to give up, but you keep going because you know that all that work and time invested will be worth it when you see the final result. When I'm not painting, I love the process of creating ambiances with lights, finding interesting people to shoot and make research.
What artists would you like to collaborate with now and in the future?
Larissa:I’m not thinking about collaborating, because it is more important for me to grow alone and to understand before any collaboration. But who knows, maybe a person arrives and complements my work, and I complement their work at a level that I can’t say no.
I can’t help notice that Larissa has a lot of style. Would you work at other fields like fashion?
Larissa: Thank you for that! Yes, I am a lover of fashion and I would love to sew, but right now I don’t have the time to invest on that, and if it’s going to be something mediocre I rather do nothing.
What’s been your experience evolving in New York?
Larissa: Moving to New York was the best decision that I’ve taken in my life. New York has opened my eyes to thousands of different perspectives and has given me the opportunity to meet my favorite artists and go to the best museums and galleries, and it has made me mature as a person and artist. Even though New York is the place to be as an artist, it can make you feel really alone and that’s the part Hollywood doesn’t sell. When I’m in New York, my pieces tend to turn around the morbid and nostalgic nature, because loneliness influences greatly my work. Also the fact that I miss to death the idea of my island.
Do you have plans of returning to Puerto Rico? Why?
Larissa: Puerto Rico is my favorite place in the world and I don’t discard going back, but for the moment I wish to keep exploring new areas where I can keep growing as an artist.
What’s your objective with art? and what’s your biggest aspiration?
Larissa:With my recent work I want to communicate the message of empowerment to women. Through my illustrations and paintings I want the spectator to feel what it is like being a woman in a society dominated by the patriarchy. To be a woman, it goes beyond the physical aspect and what society has defined as a “woman.” In my opinion, being a woman is obtaining that perfect balance between strength and tenderness. My work is the exaltation and critique of the importance in the aesthetic of beauty on our society; exploring ideas on how our obsession for the search of such beauty is what has defined to be a woman. My biggest aspiration is that people can be able to distinguish thoughts and attitudes of male chauvinism and want to change them. To be a feminist is not about placing women in a high level, it’s about wanting the same things for man and woman, the same opportunities, values, expectations, it’s about equality.
